INFORM #4 - December 2008

Inform #4 describes the ability fo employers to engage employees on a Trial Period during which they can dismiss the employee wihout the employee being able to lodge a personal grievance claim or other legal proceedings.  This issue also outlines the more recent changes to KiwiSaver - affecting how compulory employer contributions can be paid.

INFORM #2 - September 2008

Employment Relations (Breaks and Infant Feeding and other matters) Amendment Act

  • KiwiSaver - The Act establishes a new ground for a personal grievance where an employee's employment is adversely affected because they belong to a KiwiSaver scheme or complying superannuation fund. For more information see our latest INFORM employment update.
  • Breaks & Infant Feeding - This Amendment has now been passed and will come into effect on 1 April 2009. For more information regarding providing employees with rest and meal breaks and the requirement to provide appropriate facilities in the workplace for employees wishing to breastfeed, please see INFORM.

April 2008 

  • Flexible Working Arrangements Act
    • This comes into force on 1 July 2008. See our new-look employment update for clients - 'INFORM' - for more info.

  • Breaks & Infant Feeding Amendment Bill
    • A bill has recently been proposed to introduce legislative requirements around employees' entitlement to rest and meal breaks, and to promote and protect breastfeeding in the workplace. See more info on our latest INFORM employment update.

  • Minimum Wage Increases
    • The minimum wage has now increased from 1 April 2008. The 'standard' minimum wage is now $12.00, and the 'new entrants' rate is $9.60. For more information about these changes, see our March 2008 newsletter.

  • KiwiSaver Employer Contributions Kick In
    • Also from 1 April 2008, employers will now be required to contribute the equivalent of 1% of an employee's gross pay to their KiwiSaver account. This will increase annually up to an employer contribution rate of 4% by 2011. For more information about these changes, see our March 2008 newsletter.

March 2008 

  • Tricky Public Holidays - They could cost you more than you thought!
    • While many employers do already simply observe public holidays on the day they fall, some may be caught out by a recent Supreme Court decision if they want to 'transfer' public holidays to a different day...click here for more info.
